Home Office

Office Before:  Though we'll both use this space, I'm taking a back seat on design in this room.  I do know that we'll have to have cable run into this space, and I think he's looking at grey walls to match some grey drapes we already own.  I'm sure the walls will be covered with his treasures - including a signed Neil Young poster and a Pearl Jam shirt.  It will have his personality all over in here.  I can't wait to see how it turns out.

During:  Jud put up a fan in this room too, and my friend Amy and I painted the walls.  When we were done with the first coat, Amy said, "this looks a litle purple."  So I said, "It's called pebble something."  She replied, "pebble purple!?"

We showed Jud.  He didn't see anything wrong with it.  Later I told him I was glad that he liked it because I was afraid it was going to look too purple.  "Too purple?" he asked.  "Yeah," I said, "Amy said it looked purple." So...

During:  ...So after hearing him call it the purple room the whole time we were on vacation in Michigan, I came home and repainted it the color of the hallway, Kilz Dandelion.

During:  Here are the walls after the second paint color.  If you scroll to the top, you'll see it's a LOT like the before.  Ugh.

After:  Ewwww...loook at those cords under the desk.  I guess we'll ahve to fix that!

Desk was purchase at Office Depot for $99 last year.  It was a discontinued piece and a floor model.  It's nothing more than particle board, but it does the job for now, and we couldn't beat the price.  The chair was purchased at a garage sale in Michigan about ten years ago.  It was originally painted green and covered with green fabric.  My mom gave it a total makeover with a can of hammered metal spray paint and a few yards of cheap upholstry fabric from WalMart.  Drapes were purchased in the clearance section of IKEA, so imagine how cheap they were!

After:  Mad magazines were purchased at a garage sale in Michigan.  I was originally drawn to the middle one in which Mad magazine congratulates JFK on his election.  When I saw it, I knew that it would look good in a frame in the office, and I picked up the others to create a colorful grouping.  I got all three magazines for $1.50.

While we were hanging out at my parent's house one afternoon on vacation, I urged Jud to look up the magazines on ebay to see if I got ripped off.  To our amazement, the outside magazines were selling for $15, and the JFK one was selling for $85!  I figure we got quite a deal.  All three are framed in stainless RIBBA frames from IKEA.

After:  Framed Neil Young poster is Jud's pride and joy.  I had it framed for him last year using a standard frame and custom matting from Hobby Lobby.  The two frames on either side of the TV are waiting for pictures of our neice and nephew.  I got them on 90% clearance at Target last week.  The basket is from Mexico, and Jud hates it, but I pretend not to notice.  The scrabble tiles were part of my Christmas gift last year and spell out both of our names.  The rug is from the children's department at Target but fits right into the room.

After:  The stainless shelves are from IKEA, but I don't recall their name.  Metallica dolls (or "action figures") on the top shelf are Jud's favorite purchase of all time.  Originally purchased in Las Vegas years ago, they've tripled in value since that time.  I figure they're good to keep around in case we ever can't pay our mortgage.  They'll sure come in handy then.  In the mean time, they grace the top shelf in the office.  The photos are from Jud's bachelor party and our honeymoon.  The golf trophy was his great grandfathers, and the bike was a recent purchase at an antique shop in Tomball.  The framed collage below the shelves contains all sorts of movie and concert tickets from our dating days and the scrabble score sheet from the day he proposed.  The storage ottoman is from Target.

This collage wall is the pride of my mom's visit to Texas.  It took us so long and was so late at night when we finally got done, but we think it looks pretty good.  The bats are all Louisville Sluggers.  The middle one is Jud's actual bat from adult league baseball in Michigan, and the other two were purchased when we visited the Louisville Slugger factory museum over the summer on our way to Michigan.  We had quite a time looking for a way to attach the bats to the wall without damaging them.  Actual bat holders run in the $20 range, and we weren't intersted in spending $60 to hang three bats.  After searching IKEA, Target, and everywhere in between, we finally spotted some "boat hooks" in the marine section of Home Depot.  At $3.97 for a pair of hooks, they were more our style.  Jud bent out the hook on the big end to accomodate the larger end of the bat, and we're happy with the way they turned out.  The Subway sign to Yankee Stadium references our honeymoon Yankees game, and the Pearl Jam T-shirt highlights Jud's love of music.  The train night light came out of his great grandparent's house.
